Maya Wheeler is an Aurora community advocate who has been active in Colorado for over 10 years. Maya was raised in Boulder, Colorado for most of her life and moved to Aurora early in her career to help families manage difficult situations in the Colorado child welfare system as an Child Welfare Disproportionality Specialist for American Humane. During that time, Maya found a passion for community issues and became involved as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), NAACP Economic Development Committee leader, and extensive training with CCLARO (Colorado Latino Leadership, Advocacy, and Research Organization).
With a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Business Administration as well as three masters’ degrees in Health Administration, Business, and Information Management from Webster University, Maya brings a unique mix of community-conscious leadership and a long-term approach to Colorado’s jobs, housing, and infrastructure.
As a mother living in Aurora, Maya splits her time with her family and a broad group of volunteer organizations committed to public policy, economic growth, and youth issues for Aurora and Colorado.
Maya believes this will be an election organized around initiatives and vision and has built a strong, practical platform to help Colorado become more community-focused, and grow in a sustainable way. Unlike many politicians with big bank accounts, Maya believes the best way forward for Colorado lies in results-oriented, transparent leadership. For example, Maya will bring a community office in her first year of service to build a strong connection between the state legislature in Denver, and 77,000+ residents of House District 41 in Arapahoe county.
Recognized in 2019 for her community organizing efforts in Aurora which helped Colorado realize its midterm blue wave, Maya has also been recognized as a key party organzing volunteer by Morgan Carrol and the Colorado Democratic Party. This track record of building communities and organizing to protect Colorado's way of life is a defining feature for Maya. After all, the change we need to see starts locally - and that means running a community-driven campaign with your help, insight, and support.
